Teenagers today face numerous challenges, from stress and anxiety to self-esteem and identity issues. To offer insights into these challenges and provide practical tips, we spoke with our school psychologist, Lucia Gomendio.

Common Mental Health Challenges in Teenagers

Lucia identified several mental health challenges that are common among teenagers:

  • Anxiety: Often linked to academic performance or social situations, anxiety can show up as excessive worry, restlessness, or physical symptoms like headaches.
  • Depression: Persistent sadness or hopelessness may lead to withdrawal from social activities, along with changes in sleep and eating habits.
  • Stress: The pressure from academics and social expectations creates a high-stress environment, leading to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
  • Loneliness: Despite being constantly connected through technology, many teens feel isolated, which can be worsened by social media.
  • Self-Esteem Issues: Peer pressure and concerns about body image can lower a teen’s confidence, affecting both their social life and mental health.

Five Tips for Prioritising Mental Health

  1. Establish a Healthy Routine
    Regular sleep (7-9 hours), a balanced diet, and physical activity all support cognitive function and improve mood.
  2. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation
    Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga help students manage stress and stay focused.
  3. Stay Connected
    Strong support systems are essential. Students should regularly talk to friends, family, or trusted adults and seek professional help when needed.
  4. Manage Academic Stress
    Breaking assignments into smaller tasks and taking regular breaks can reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and prevent burnout.
  5. Limit Screen Time
    Setting boundaries with social media helps maintain self-esteem and mental health. Taking breaks from screens, especially before bed, improves sleep quality.

Mental Health Resources at The Global College

We offer a comprehensive Well-being Program to support students throughout their time with us. Leading this initiative is Lucia, who provides individual counseling, group therapy, and crisis intervention.

  • Well-Being Day: To kick off the year, we hold a Well-Being Day focused on mental health awareness and promoting healthy habits.
  • Expert Talks: Mental health professionals regularly speak to students, sharing strategies to better manage their mental health.
  • Mentorship Program: Students have regular one-on-one meetings to discuss academic and personal challenges, helping them build confidence and a sense of belonging.
  • Safeguarding Program: Our staff are trained to recognise signs of mental health struggles, ensuring students get the support they need.
  • Housemaster Support: For boarders, the housemaster offers daily guidance and emotional support.

On 10th October, we also mark World Mental Health Day, encouraging everyone to take a moment to reflect on their mental well-being and how they can support one another.
